Propylene glycol is mainly used for surface coating and glass fiber reinforced unsaturated polyester resin (UPR). It’s second largest application is antifreeze, instead of ethylene glycol used in antifreeze aircraft and used as a coolant in the food. It can be used in the production of plasticizer and hydraulic brake fluid. It also can be used as nonionic detergents and as a moisturizer in medicine, cosmetics, animal food and tobacco industry. In addition, PG can be used for printing ink and epoxy resin, etc. as a good performance of solvent.
PG is a colorless liquid with steady viscosity and good water absorption. It is nearly odorless, uninflammable and minutely toxic. Its molecular mass is 76.09. Its viscosity (20 ℃), specific heat capacity (20℃) and latent heat of vaporization (101.3kpa) are respectively 60.5mpa.s, 2.49KJ/(kg. ℃) and 711KJ/kg. It can be mixed and solved with alcohol, water and various organic agents.
